Sacred Ground Begins Soon!

Picture
The Episcopal Diocese of Long Island invites you to participate in a summer series of Sacred Ground; the Episcopal Church’s film-and readings-based dialogue series on race. Last year, roughly 100 members of our diocese joined this important conversation. Their reflections can be found here.

The series starts Monday, May 2, at 7:30 pm with a gathering of all participants over Zoom.

After this initial meeting, small groups continue independently over the course of summer, with a reunion held at the Cathedral in the fall.

Working Our Way to General
Convention 2022: Canon Chuck Robertson Discusses the Modern Episcopal Church

As part of the final online meeting of the School for Ministry course Church History 2 Anglican Christianity, Canon Ted introduced The Rev Canon C. K. (Chuck) Robertson, Canon to the Presiding Bishop for Ministry Beyond the Episcopal Church. Previously recorded via Zoom in interview format, the discussion covered major themes in the development of the Anglican Communion in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and offered a peek into the agendas of the summer 2022 meetings of the Episcopal Church’s General Convention and the Lambeth Conference. A link to this conversation is here:  Dialog with Canon Robertson

SAFE CHURCH UPDATE

All in-person Safe Church dates are cancelled until further notice.

En Espanol - Safe Church Policies
Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance.
~Proverbs 1:5

2022 begins with many of the same questions we have asked for the last two years. How do we prepare for life’s new challenges?  How can we treasure the simpler things and spend our time wisely? How can we move forward when there is so much uncertainty?  This proverb encourages us to build knowledge and understanding as we seek answers.

This Spring, the Mercer School of Theology offers several new options for building our knowledge.

Beginning in February the students and faculty of the Mercer School for Ministry will explore and reflect upon themes in the life of the Church through classes in New Testament Scripture and Theology.  A few new courses are offered in Ecumenical and Interfaith Relations, The Book of Common Prayer and Christian Ethics from an Anglican Perspective. Primarily for those seeking ordination to the diaconate, these courses are offered as a core academic program and as an Anglican Studies program.  Many of the offerings are also open to lay learners.

All of these Saturday classes will be held exclusively on-line being mindful of the challenges the Covid-19 virus still presents for live group gatherings.  CLASSES BEGIN ON SATURDAY, FEB 19TH with online morning prayer at 8:30 am.  Registration is now open.

For lay learners looking for a weekday class experience, the popular Online Lunch & Learn one-hour monthly series will return on Wednesday, February 2nd.  These are short noontime conversations on Zoom with experts from our midst here in the Diocese of Long Island and beyond.  Our guest instructors will touch on prayer life, church history, the saints, and even Mary Magdalene.

Please visit us here regularly for updates, to register, and for more learning opportunities.

The Mercer School is intent on developing resources that respond to the issues of our time, putting our theological tradition into living dialogue with the needs and challenges we face today. In your learning journey, may you find support, learning and empowerment to carry out the ministry to which you are called, in joy!
